Joe’s Parkway market has been family owned and run for 42 years. Big Joe, as he was called, purchased the grocery in 1969. He moved from managing the local Safeway to owning this small grocery store whose primary customers were Montana State University college students. In 1991 Joe’s Parkway sold the most beer per capita West of the Mississippi.

Today, Joe’s Parkway Market is well known for their specialty food and wine selection. Owned and operated by Judy and her daughter-in-law, Tara, Joe’s Parkway stocks over 200 imported and 500 domestic wines. The market also has a full service meat and deli department and gourmet hand cut cheese case. As a great honor, in 2005 Joe’s Parkway Market was awarded one of Montana’s top ten “local secrets, big finds” by Travelocity. The two “foodie” mavericks stock 10,000 products and try everything before they buy it. Their trick to 42 years of success is simple; they know the products and help their costumers.

Think about shapes that will fit nicely together, coordinating colors, filler, gift wrap and gift tags. It’s festive to see some of the gifts sticking out of the top of the bag or basket! If you are using a deep bag or basket, try to fluff up your filler so your contents don’t get hidden inside. You want your gift basket to appear overflowing with all of your great little gifts.

Use interesting wrap. We like tea towels, burlap and shiny cellophane depending on the type of gift basket. Then, coordinate your gift tag to your wrapping so the whole bundle looks lovely together. Your recipient will appreciate all of the thought you have put into your gift!

After a fun lesson on building your holiday table, we are all inspired…

Here’s what Brigitte discussed:

Invest in your basics.

• Solid tablecloths in several colors that fits the length of your table. Go inexpensive on these. Try bedspreads, coverlets, raw material, burlap, etc. for great layers.
• Several festive printed cloths in smaller sizes that can be layered on top of your solid colored cloths.
• Purchase placemats and napkins to coordinate. Think about complementary textures and colors.

Start building.

• Address the side of the table, an often overlooked aspect of table setting. Perhaps turn a placemat sideways and hang it over the side so that your guests can see the pattern as they approach the table. Maybe a fabric cutting is layered on top of the placemat. In our case, Brigitte used a smaller rectangle of burlap over a napkin she had turned on its side to tie together her tablecloths.
• Brigitte used a curtain panel on top of the solid placemat to give the solid cloth more visual interest.
• She then layered a table runner on top of the curtain panel. Her foundation was laid.

Dinnerware.

• We use basic white dinnerware because it is so versatile. This Portuguese pattern can be dressed up or down quite easily to fit the occasion.

Centerpieces.

• Brigitte developed a woodland theme with this table. She used birch-like pillar candles to set the tone and then added preserved boxwood greens and unscented dried vegetables and fruit to bring out a forest feel. She then used several mercury glass votives and candlesticks to add sparkle and shine to the table. Her final touch? Tiny lights strung through the pine cones! A gorgeous juxtaposition of rustic and shiny.

The sky is the limit with table setting. Take the time to play with textures and colors until you get right. Layer textures, use things you already have and have fun with it!

Wow, did we learn a lot last night! Katalin was on fire and had us all drooling over gorgeous holiday centerpieces.

The Bento Box Arrangement

We began with the Bento Box arrangement. Start with any square wooden box and line it with cello wrap from your local craft store to contain the water. Immerse Oasis Floral Foam in water until it is soaked through. Then place the foam in the box and cut to size with a sharp kitchen knife. Traditionalists allow the foam to sit up an inch or so over the top of the box but the contemporary method is to shave the foam so it is flush with box. Either way is totally acceptable.

Now it’s time place your flowers. Katalin used Magnolia leaves to form the foundation of her arrangement. Magnolia leaves, like many of the other flowers that Katalin likes, are difficult to find in Montana. She recommends forming a relationship with a local florist who can order all of the products you need. Magnolia leaves are especially enticing because they have shiny green tops with soft velvety brown bottoms. Ralph Lauren anyone? Katalin then placed orange roses to add color and interest. The shape of the vessel dictates how the flowers are placed. Few rules apply here but it helps to place the flowers at an angle so they form a gentle rounded silhouette. Katalin recommends covering any holes with sheet moss (can be ordered from your florist) and then trimming the extra cello wrap. You now have a gorgeous centerpiece for your holiday table!

Next Katalin discussed The Belgain Bundle Technique at an angle in the vessel. This technique can be found in the Four Seasons lobbies in Europe and it must be noted that us Bozemanites may not be ready for this look. The tightly wrapped bundle is loosely placed

comfortably in the vase. Ti Leaves are folded in half and stuck together with sticky dots found in the scrap booking section of your local craft store. Then the flowers, roses in this case, are placed in front of the leaves and wound tightly with silk ribbon. You can gather several of these bunches together to make a larger bouquet to place in a short vase for the table. Katalin reminded us to think about shorter arrangements versus taller for the holiday table. Nothing is worse than having your guests ask that the centerpiece be removed because it is too tall!

Katalin then showed us how to use a Blocking Technique. These arrangements are not necessarily built in the round. Like flowers get grouped in a single spot in the container to create a visual focus. Then other greenery and vines can be placed in the voids. Katalin used roses again. (Use a flexible plastic soap dish to strip your roses of their thorns.) Katalin then added mini pumpkins on a stem (these can only be purchased around the Thanksgiving holiday and are difficult to find–but persevere because they are perfect for the holiday table!) and then a few vines to add texture and height.

All ages learn how to make unique container gardens

Back in September, Heyday’s garden specialist, Kara Zurliene showed workshop guests how to create Container Gardens. For all of you who couldn’t make it, here is the step-by-step process.

Our very own garden pro, Kara Zurliene.

1.)   Line the wooden or glass containers with a black plastic bag. This ensures cleanliness.

2.)   Next add gravel or cocoa chips on top of the plastic bag as a base layer so the soil can drain.

3.)   On top of this layer place a few inches of potting soil from your local gardening store.

An arbor is always a sweet touch.

4.)   Your foundation has been laid! Now use your own imagination and create your own dream garden. It sometimes helps to draw a quick sketch of your idea before you start planting.

5.)   Make pathways with stones, use moss as a green backdrop and wind vines around topiaries and arbors. Plant first, then place your accessories in around your plants.

6.)   Wrap your gift loosely with cellophane or burlap, tie a bow around the container and attach a small tag with care instructions.

Using fairy garden accessories from Heyday, low maintenance plants and unique stones from the local garden center will guarantee each container its own charm.  The placement of each plant plays a key role with the flow of each container.

Off center or asymmetrical design can make the container look more interesting all together. Adding simple touches, such as a tiny garden pot with Spanish moss or seashells, really makes each garden a personal expression.
